Chapter 9

As though this was their very last night on Earth, Professor Abbacus served double helpings of food to Alice, Toby and Carla. They were able to eat lasagne and pasta bake until they were comfortably full. Even Toby didn’t complain afterwards that he wanted more food to fill his grumbling belly. All of them were so satisfied, so warm and so comfortable, that after their various showers they collapsed on their bunks and slept the sleep of the dead until Professor Abbacus started pulling blankets off them, banging on the walls next to their heads and demanding they rise to face the new day/night or whatever the heck it was out here.

Alice got up, once again feeling rested and ready to attack. Anxiety tried to grab hold, but she was just feeling too darn good. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d had such a fantastic sleep. She hadn’t even been a good sleeper as a child. She gobbled her porridge down with gusto, changed into a fresh new uniform, braided her long black hair and flexed her fingers in preparation for spell-casting. “I’m ready!” she declared confidently.

“How about you two?” Abbacus asked Toby and Carla.

“I’m rarin’ to go,” Toby declared, and Carla nodded.

“Not scared of what you might face?” Abbacus continued. “What you’ll see inhabiting the old Russian Academy will be considerably more frightening than the lost spirits of the dead. You will be facing imps and demons of all shapes and sizes.”

“Imps and demons I can handle,” declared Toby. “Those undead out there are just too … insubstantial.” He grinned, pleased that he’d managed to come out with such a big word on his own. “But you can just cast that courage spell over us again, can’t you?”

“I don’t want to give you too much of a false sense of security. We’re going to the Immaterium and although we’ll be sneaking in under some very powerful concealments, this adventure will end in a really big, nasty fight. Too much gung-ho behaviour will only get you killed.”

Toby’s big smile faded and he nodded soberly. “Yes sir.”

Abbacus turned to Bukarev and the Cherenko siblings. “What about you? Are you ready?”

“All our spells are up. We’re ready.”

“You Cherenkos realise that even if by some small miracle you do find your lost relatives alive they more than likely will not be recognisable as the people you knew and loved. They’ll probably be twisted and insane, even worse than the mindless undead battering themselves at the Great Cosmic Mirror like flies against glass.”

Alice lifted a hand to her mouth. She hadn’t known that the Cherenkos were looking for lost family.

The siblings nodded solemnly. “We just want to find out what happened to them,” Boris answered and Danika nodded again.

Abbacus grunted. “Just so you know. Is everyone ready?”

“Yes.”

“Good.” The Professor lifted his hands and cast the concealing spells over Alice, Toby and Carla. These seemed even longer and more complicated than before. Alice felt an audible hum in the air and her ears blocked up like someone had cranked up a massive speaker somewhere.
